FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Team GloboRoboTron Won 2009 Smart Moves NC FLL Region 1 Competition on January 23, 2010January 23, 2010 -- Team GloboRoboTron from Bryson City won the North Carolina First Lego League Region 1 Tournament held on Saturday, January 23, 2010 at Western Carolina University. The GloboRobotron team is made up of students at Swain High School, Swain Middle School, Mountain Discovery Charter School, and home schooled. GloboRoboTron is not sponsored through any particular school, but is a non-profit organization to help the youth in Swain County to participate in science, engineering, and technology activities including the robotic competitions. Shay Marceau, team captain, and a freshman at Swain High School, lead her team to two victories at the tournament. The team’s robot won 1st place in Robot Design and they earned the top score in the Robot Mission Runs running away with the top place with their robot scoring the most points at the tournament winning the 1st place trophy for Robot Performance. Each team member had a part in the competition. There are 4 phases of the competition: Teamwork, Project, Robot Design, and Robot Performance. For the project GloboRoboTron put on a skit about the dangers of Drowsy Driving. The dressed up as Crash Test Dummies and designed Crash Test Cars. Matt Mordhorst and Brandon Penely as Crash Test Dummy BoBo and Fud were narrators for the “Drowsy Driving is for Dummies” skit. Vance Tyson as Crash Test Dummy Dave Doge was the driver of the Crash Test Car with the HALT (Human Alertness Level Test) with his passenger George Cruise as Crash Test Dummy Buster. Rye Hester was Crash Test Dummy Chili Pepper who was in the engine of the car running the flashing headlights. Shay Marceau as Tina the Crash Test Dummy was in a separate Crash Test car without the HALT system that crashed while "driving drowsy". The HALT system was played by Jesse Hart as Crash Test Dummy Hal T. The team members enjoyed creating their Crash Test Cars and Crash Test Dummy uniforms. For the Robot Design, the judges were impressed with GloboRoboTron mindstorm robot that used binary logic to straighten itself and had a unique steering system. The team was ecstatic to win the 1st place trophy for Robot Design. The main portion of the competition was for Robot Performance in 2.5 minute runs to see how many points the team can receive through completed missions. GloboRoboTron scored more points than the other teams. Shay Marceau with the help of Brandon Penely ran the table, starting their robot for each mission run. George Cruise and Vance Tyson helped to keep score to match up with the judges score, Jesse Hart was the team time keeper, with the other team members, Matt Mordhorst and Rye Hester, cheering the team on for each robot run. The team enjoyed the cheering from their parents while competing. Without the parents the kids would not have been able to work as much as they did on their robot and their project. Since GloboRoboTron won 1st place they will be advancing to NC FLL State Championship at the Greensboro Coliseum on February 20, 2009. Team GloboRoboTron would like to extend thanks to Nantahala Cabins, the Swain County Chamber of Commerce, and the Swain Rescue Squad for meeting space. We would like to thank Lowe’s of Sylva with the help with the Crash Test Dummy Uniforms and the Swain County Community Foundation for the grant to purchase the additional Lego materials needed in helping us win the 1st place Robot Design Trophy. We would also like to thank Nantahala Canopy Tours for our team building session.
